Rodriguez scores five goals as U.S. women rout Dominican Republic
Vancouver, BC, Canada (AHN Sports) – The United States blitzed the Dominican Republic 14-0 Friday in the U.S.’s opening game of the CONCACAF qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games.
The game was never in doubt as the Americans scored three goals in the first seven minutes of the win. A little of the joy of the victory was taken away as defender Ali Krieger went down with a serious right knee injury.
Amy Rodriguez scored five goals, all in the second half, to tie a U.S. record. The 14 goals are the most the Americans have ever scored in a game in their 27-year history.
Abby Wambach scored two goals, including one 37 seconds into the match. She left at halftime as it was Rodriguez’s turn to shine.
The U.S. led 7-0 at the half as it outshot the Dominican Republic 20-1.
Heather O’Reilly added a hat trick for the U.S., which improved to 32-1-1 all-time in qualifying for World Cups and Olympics.
